Now that spring has finally shown itself, a lot of us are taking time to enjoy the blooming beauty around us. While we wait for more flowers to bloom, we’ve got to make the most of what we’ve got! Below are some ideas for making the most out of our spring flowers.
Use Your Flowers in Drinks
You can’t expect your spring flowers to last much longer than a month or two. Over time, they start to fade and get leggy. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t use them in drinks. Keep a few of your favorite spring-blooming herbs and flowers in your fridge all year long. For instance, mint, dandelion flowers and elderflower can all make delicious, flavourful drinks. The cool climate in which those herbs thrive, in combination with the insulating oils found in plant leaves, makes them ideal for keeping in your fridge.
Use Your Flowers in Panforte
Pansotti or else known as panforte in English, is one of the most popular Italian desserts. It consists of a rich, almond paste filling with walnuts or other nuts, and it can be decorated with dried fruits and nuts.
Panforte is rich and sweet – and sometimes has a hint of smoke. However, the smoke comes from the leaves of the Sanguisorba minor or Primula veris, a herbaceous plant that grows in winter and spring. It has a fresh, minty taste that gives panforte its distinctive flavour.
How to Make Panforte with Primula veris
Separate out the leaves of a bunch of the Primula veris, and remove any stems. Make sure that the stems aren’t bitter. You can also blanch the leaves (boiling them for around 1 minute) if you want to remove their bitterness. You need 4 parts Primula veris to one part almond paste to make 1 panforte.
Use your Primula veris leaves to create a crust. Grate about 4 ounces of the Primula veris on a cheese grater. Spread the Primula veris on a tray and toast it at 400 degrees F for 10 minutes.
Now take about 2-3 ounces of the dry almond paste and mix with the toasted leaves. Press the mixture into a pan. Sprinkle your Primula veris crust with bits of nuts and dried fruits. Bake your pan 0b46394aab
