Command & Conquer gameplay typically requires the player to construct a base and acquire resources, in order to fund the ongoing production of various types of forces with which to assault and conquer the opponent's base. All available structures of the faction chosen by the player are constructed on-site at so-called "construction yard" - which typically begin as large-sized vehicles capable of deploying themselves into the aforementioned construction yards, called MCVs or Mobile Construction Vehicle. When a construction yard has finished building a new structure, the player can select a spot near to a preexisting structure in order to place it, where the prefabricated building will rapidly unfold in a distinctive manner.

The game was initially released on Windows on February 10, 2003 on disc. It was on April 14, 2004 ported to Mac OS X by i5works and published by Aspyr Media, who also maintained the port over the years. Reception of the game was good, with several post-launch patches being released to fix most bugs, exploits and balancing issues. EA Los Angeles developed its expansion Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour, which got released on 19 September, 2003 on Windows and later ported to Mac OS X in February 2005. As of August 2022 the game remains playable on modern Windows versions with some major technical hiccups that can be worked around; issues like errors when staring the game, DRM issues and serial key errors. A tool called GenPatcher was created by the community to more easily fix these issues, restore command line support for the Origin/EA app version, add modern resolution support and apply various fixes and improvements. The macOS version however was delisted from the Mac App Store in May 2020.
Additionally, I've been informed various times that the game has a bug where the mouse freezes when you open the in-game menu. I knew that the fix to this was to enable Win95 compatibility mode, but unfortunately, the config tool removed compatibility if CnC-DDraw was enabled, because that's the way it worked best on WinXP (on which the patch was originally developed).
Hi I recently purchased the English version of the Ultimate C&C collection. I do not seem to be able to get this patch to work unfortunately. Did anybody else manage to get this working with the Ultimate version?
This page lists the codes which may be input into the Console Window, a special debugging window which may be accessed on non-ironman games by hitting ^ , ° or tilde (~) (key varies based on keyboard layout). Press the up or down arrow keys to traverse through previously executed commands. An easy way to tell internal IDs is debug mode. debug as a console command will turn on debug mode which can provide information about certain database entries, such as focuses, national spirits (and other ideas such as laws or designers), or technologies when hovering over them, as well as obtaining information when hovering over a province of IDs of the state and the province, as well as the 3-letter country tag of the country it belongs to. Note that while modding, the console command does not do everything that the launch option does and cannot serve as a substitute.
If you want to contribute to this page, which is a work in progress, in the console type "help" to see the list of commands, then to see a description and parameter of a command, type "help [command-name]", and put the corresponding details into the list.
