The CSR1000v is also capable of running the Cisco Prime Management Appliance (PMA) to allow for HANA or other Cisco Prime Management Appliances. This might be a little bit of a big deal but not entirely. If you're familiar with the Prime Management Appliance, it's basically a XaaS and IaaS based solution from Cisco for managing network infrastructure. The CSR1000v runs in the same way as the PMA. You install it on the hypervisor server, configure it (allow access to SSH, Telnet etc) and when you reboot it you're back up and running. Not only that but it allows for remote management and configuration over any hypervisor. One of the very nifty things about this product from a day and age perspective is that it's a closed architecture. You get a license for the IOS XE (and you're not really paying any license fees for it) and you get a license for the hypervisor and a license for the CSR1000v. If you want to use the CSR1000v, you get a license for the hypervisor. Basically this is a way of avoiding an open ecosystem where you have to license every product in the system to be able to use it. This means that the CSR1000v and the hypervisor are perfectly isolated and don't really communicate with anything else. You get what you pay for I guess.

So how does it work? Well to put it simply, take an ASR1000 and replace the OS with the IOS XE version in the CSR1000v. The IOS XE is installed on a virtual instance on the hypervisor server and then all the services the CSR1000v provides are virtualized within the hypervisor environment using the IOS XE as the client. The CSR1000v is hosted on the hypervisor server (I can't remember which hypervisor this product is for but I do know it works with VMWare and Citrix) and allows you to manage the CSR1000v from any hypervisor. You can install new IOS XE release and simply reboot the CSR1000v and you're back up and running. You can also remotely manage the CSR1000v from any hypervisor.
