Another 5th century text, the Satapatha Brahmana, provides an elaborate description of the worship of Shashthi during the child-birth rites. The text begins with a description of the sleeping apartment in which the child is born, noting that an idol of the goddess is kept in a chest within the room. The goddess is invoked in the apartment on the day of the child's birth, and the deities of her immediate family as well as the householder's ancestors are invoked for protection during the birth.[16]
The Satapatha Brahmana describes the ritual of worship performed by the new mother after giving birth. After the birth of her child, the new mother invokes the goddess on the sixth day after childbirth, when Shashthi arrives to perform the puja. The goddess is first invoked through an image made of cow-dung, and, once the goddess has been invoked, the new mother utters prayers and makes offerings, and then leaves the house. In the evening, a ritual described in the Satapatha Brahmana and other texts is performed in which libations of milk and ghee are offered to the gods. The mother and her child, along with a cow, are brought back into the house, where the child is presented with the milk offered to the gods. After the ritual, the family has a meal and later bathes the newborn. At this point, the mother of the child, still wearing the same loincloth she wore during child-birth, lies in the mother's bed and is worshipped. Thus, the ritual allows the mother to leave her lying-in room after giving birth to her child without hypocrisy or excessive behaviour, and by the seventh day after childbirth, the mother has a free passage to resume her normal life.
In the East and Southeast, Shashthi Puja is performed to protect the mother and child during the first hours of birth. According to the Koshti Upanishad, Shashthi Puja should be performed at midnight to ward off premature births and at 2 AM to ward off babies born after 2 AM on the night of the sixth day after childbirth.[17] d2c66b5586
