.Powered byJustWatch19. Gupt (1997) (Dir. Rajiv Rai) (Hindi)Well, you were not expecting a list of Indian murder mystery movies without Gupt, right? If you are the 80s or a 90s kid and were in age to be slightly aware of things during its release, you know the mass hysteria this film had created. Everyone was talking about the climax. Sahil Sinha (Bobby Deol) is in love with Isha (Kajol) and wants to marry her. However, his tyrannical step-father, Jaisingh (Raj Babbar), insists that he marry the girl he has hand-picked. After a lousy argument erupts between them, Jaisingh turns up dead. Sahil, who is viewed as the prime suspect, is arrested and put on trial for murder and ends up receiving a life sentence in jail. To prove his innocence, Sahil manages to escape prison and looks for the real killer.
The real mystery is, ' Why was this movie even made?'. There is absolutely no saving grace for this movie, and it pretty much sucks in all aspects. It was promoted as a thriller, and it is anything but that. It is filled with clichés and the usual Bollywood style twists and turns, which are abundantly found in most of the movies. Plot It has nothing new to offer, revolving around the life of a model; Ria ( Mahima Choudary), who aspires to become an actress. Haven't you heard this storyline before? Add to this, the entry of the Hero ( Dino Morea), who comes to rescue the Damsel in Distress. He is a stunts man by profession. Perfect.
Ignoring the dull murder mystery plot which cheats the ending, this is so fun. Every single one of the musical numbers is amazing. The dance sequence that opens the film is iconic, just watching the dancer is enough to give you a headache. The repeated siren song, a riff on Mancinini's theme for Charade is suitably haunting. Love the walking transition to that song too, really feels like they're entering into another world.
Everybody knows this film now thanks to the insane musical number, Jaan Pehechaan Ho featured in Ghost World, but what they probably don't realize is that the rest of the movie is an instant cure for insomnia. Ostensibly a murder mystery, the plot moves at a glacial pace in between the occasional upbeat dance number. The comedy relief, Mehmood, looks like the love child of Hitler and Moe Howard, and is about as entertaining. My advice is to watch Ted Lyon and His Cubs on YouTube, and skip the rest of this snoozefest.
Other than the fact that Jaan Pehechaan Ho is an absolute banger of a song and starts this film on such a high note, it's only downhill from there. As the characters find themselves stranded on an island and stumble into a large mansion, there were some major "Clue" vibes, so I was pretty hopeful. Unfortunately, the "thriller" aspect is almost nonexistent. Supposedly there is a killer among the group...Is it the butler with the hitler-stache?Is it the showgirl Miss Kitty? Is it the doctor? The drunkard? Well if you want the characters to try and figure this out...better give up on that idea because they would much rather have a party down on the beach or flirt with each other in the rain. I will say that the song-and-dance numbers were amazing, but there was definitely more than enough time to flesh out the murder mystery in between songs. 2b1af7f3a8
